Travel literature does not constitute an objective source: neither the images nor the texts escape the cliches of the time in which they were written. In the age of the Grand Tour, western culture appropriated the history of Sicily and the South, andit did so by selecting and distorting data and information. From a personal point of view, the author underlines the legacies, born between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, which still condition current historiography, perception of places and the collective imagination. Writer, journalist and traveler Paolo Rumiz is one of the most important representatives of the Italian travel literature. His published works describe two trips to Ukraine in 1999 and 2008. In particular, this writer travels through the Ukrainian Carpathians. In his writings he uses the term Ruthenia, talks about the identity of the Ruthenians, writes about the peculiarities of the character of the local peoples. The aim of the present article is to present to the reader the works of an Italian expert on the Eastern European ethno-national context, to offer an Ukrainian translation and to describe the main characteristics of the works of this Italian writer.

Aquest article s'inscriu dins del projecte Concepcions i discursos sobre la modernitat en la literatura catalana dels segles XIX i XX, del Grup d'Estudis de Literatura Catalana Contemporània de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (referència HUM2005-01109 del MEC), i neix de dos estudis anteriors (Real 2006a i 2006b), als quals remeto per a una explicació més detallada tant amb relació a Bertrana com al context cultural del moment, en especial pel que fa a la literatura d'autora.

Based on some literary extracts (autobiographical prose and poetry) of the Valencian writer Josep Piera, the relationship between the experience of the journey and the writing that comes along as a result of it is analyzed. Three key concepts are discussed : the journey, the Mediterranean and literature. As we will see, the Mediterranean is understood here as a close and familiar world : a mythical, historical, cultural and vital geographical space. The places visited (Greece, Naples, Sicily, etc.) interact and produce a dialogue with the geographical space and the notion of human time.

Il testo è suddiviso in sei capitoli, ciascuno dei quali analizza aspetti connessi alle esperienze di viaggi per mare in relazione con elementi narratologici e tematici di capolavori della sea literature.
